Chapter Five
Ida woke early the following morning, fixing breakfast for her new husband. She fixed pancakes and bacon because they were all she really had the ingredients for. She was scraping the bottom of the flour barrel for the pancakes as it was. Joshua kissed her goodbye and left for the church as soon as they finished eating. When he was gone, she looked around the tiny house. She was on her own until lunchtime.
Ida quickly washed the breakfast dishes before sitting at the table to make a quick list of things she’d need. The mercantile here would be much easier to go to, because it was closer than the one in Dallas had been to her home there. She made a list for the next few days, figuring she could go back on Monday. She could go every day if she felt like it.
She tied her bonnet strings before leaving the house and closed the door behind her. She’d found a small basket on the work table that she would use to carry her purchases back to the house.
When she reached the mercantile, she immediately walked up to the clerk. Joshua had said they were friends, but for the life of her, she couldn’t remember his name. She handed him the letters.
The man looked at the letters in his hand for a moment, before he grinned. “You must be Pastor Anderson’s new wife. I’m pleased to meet you.” He jumped up from the stool he was seated on and gave her hand a pump. “I’m Robert Smith. It’s so good to meet you. Joshua’s been walking on air ever since you agreed to be his wife.” The man was very warm and welcoming, and Ida wanted to hide from him. She hated talking to strangers.
Ida blushed and smiled politely. “Nice to meet you,” she mumbled. She hurried over to the flour barrel and told him how much she needed and turned the topic to business. She could handle talking about purchases, but would be terribly embarrassed to talk about anything else with him.
Several people walked into the store while she was there, and Mr. Smith introduced Ida to each of them as “the pastor’s new wife.” Ida nodded politely but said little that didn’t directly relate to her purchases. How on earth was she going to be able to handle meeting everyone at church in two days?
She kept her head down on her walk home, hoping that no one would stop her and try to talk to her. She hated that she felt so uncomfortable meeting everyone, but she couldn’t help it. She didn’t know how she was going to be able to handle being married to a pastor. What had she been thinking?
She hurriedly put bacon on to fry and made sandwiches for her and Joshua. She’d spent a lot longer at the mercantile than she’d planned to spend, but she hadn’t had a choice with the owner introducing her to everyone who walked in. She wished he’d been a little less friendly, but she’d done her best to be kind to everyone.
